Lipari - festa della Madonna di Porto Salvo
The feast of La Madonna di Porto Salvo (Our Lady of Porto Salvo) is another striking, enjoyable festivity in Lipari, held on the second Sunday in July.
Two days before the actual feast-day, there are music events and the chance to taste the typical Malvasia delle Lipari wine and local pastries. Then there is the spectacular and moving moment when candles are floated on the surface of the sea, opposite the bay of Marina Lunga, in memory of victims of the sea.
However the main attraction of this festival is the sea procession when a great number of boats gather in front of the Sottomonastero pier and await the arrival of the statue of the Madonna, carried in procession and accompanied by the island’s brass band.
A boat especially prepared for the occasion awaits the statue and the priests. The boats then slowly sail in procession towards Punta San Francesco.
Mass is celebrated at the end of the procession and, again, the festivities conclude with a firework display.
